Teemu Arina, Chief Biohacker and Chairman of the board at Biohacker Center based in Finland Participates in Risk Roundup to discuss Promise and Perils of the Biohacking movement.

The Promise and Perils of Biohacking

Freedom to explore human biology, the human brain, human life– and its ecosystem is a wonderful thing. Along with the democratization of information, tools, and technology, over the years, biohacking to neurohacking — the emerging decentralized, do it yourself self-biology and brain simulation movement brings nations a great promise for solving the complex problems facing humanity.

This is especially promising in a time when we are no longer confined to what nature must offer, as the advances in science and technology have given us the capability to even create living things. While what nature has given, is still the foundation to our natural human biological ecosystem, we, the humans are now able to build on this foundation and create a man-made, synthetic bio-ecosystem of our desire and definition.

The time is almost here, where the ability to create or manipulate human life and its potential seems restricted only by the imagination, as we will now be able to not only manipulate existing human body cells, tissues and systems– but also be able to build any cell, organism or biological species up from scratch.

So, when the emerging biohacking, neurohacking or lifehacking practice involves not only manipulating human systems but also genes and the brain—with or without sufficient understanding of its impact– the promise and perils of this emerging do-it-yourself movement need to be properly understood and evaluated.

So, as we take a step forward towards the de-centralization of biology, it is important to understand where this trend is taking us and where we are going. And since decentralization is being considered a milestone in democratization, and a force for good in the world, what does the idea of broadening participation in human biology research bring to the current and future state of not only biology but also humanity. It is important to understand and evaluate where are emerging citizen science and the democratization of scientific tools taking humanity. Time is now to understand and evaluate The Promise and Perils of Biohacking!
