Dr. James Hughes from the Institute of Ethics and Emerging Technologies participates in Risk Roundup to discuss Technology Super Convergence and Security Risks.
Technology Super Convergence and Security Risks
Nations currently stand on the verge of the most transformative and turbulent period in all of human history. As information technology, genetics, nanotechnology, robotics, and artificial intelligence merge and converge to make the once impossible imagination possible, it is not only human and machine intelligence that will merge and create unthinkable possibilities: the likes of molecular manufacturing and other technological advances will bring earth-shattering potential to build virtually any physical item quickly and inexpensively directly from untainted and pure information.
The pace of technological change coming our way is expected to be so rapid, its impact so deep, that human life, its expectations, and experiences will be irreversibly transformed. When the rapidly emerging technological convergence that is close to reaching the commercialization stage is about to create a technological tsunami, it will undoubtedly change the whole global dynamics, security, and power structure.
This will not only fundamentally change human lives but will also create new industries, destroy a few industries, impact a large number of industry sectors, evaporate a number of businesses, create a significant amount of hi-tech specialized and skilled jobs, destroy a large number of unskilled jobs, collapse a few nations and change the nature of an unprecedented number of security risks in cyberspace, geospace, and space. It will be by far much more complex and much bigger than any security risks we face in cyberspace, geospace and space currently!
Time is now to talk about technology superconvergence and security risks.
