India: Aadhar Payment System and Universal Payment Interface
Since cash seems to be no longer the dominant payment method across nations, the competition in digital payment methods is getting fierce. As a result, nations are going through a fierce battle between different modes of digital payment systems and payment interfaces.
Now as nations experience a rapid and growing use of diverse digital methods of recording, managing, and exchanging money in commerce, investment, and day to day life– it is important to understand and evaluate:
- which technologies, payment systems, and interfaces are leading the evolution in digital payments across nations?
- whether nations are prepared for the rapidly emerging payment systems and cashless economy?
Since India’s Aadhaar payment system has been troubled by performance issues, lack of transparency, security, fraud, and rule challenges; the growing uncertainty around the system perhaps centers largely on a decision about the legality of the system itself. Time is now to evaluate whether the Aadhar system will ever be safe and secure without an effective legal framework, regulation, and/or institutions?
