Prof. John Kontos, a Research Scientist and Professor from the Department of Sciences of Cognition and Thinking (SCT) at the University of Athens, Greece participates in Risk Roundup to discuss Consciousness in Computer Systems.
Consciousness in Computer Systems
Computers perform computations and considering software powers the computers to run on its own (or any machine embedded with a computer to run on its own), it raises some fundamental questions:
- Are computers, or machines embedded with computers, conscious?
- Is there a definition of consciousness for computers or machines embedded with computers?
- Are computers or machines embedded with computers aware of their surroundings?
- Which conditions need to be met for computers or embedded machines to qualify as conscious?
The answers to these questions depend entirely on how we understand consciousness in computers/machines. Now, since the term machine consciousness is already defined liberally, we should perhaps try to understand machine consciousness in terms of computer systems consciousness in a way it would make sense for computers to follow human commands.
The time is now to evaluate what exactly is consciousness in computers or computer-embedded machines!
