Dr. David Fogel, President of Natural Selection, Inc. and the Co-Chair of the 2017 IEEE Symposium Series on Computational Intelligence participates in Risk Roundup to discuss Computational Intelligence & Security Risks.

Computational Intelligence & Security Risks

Computational Intelligence is about building intelligent agents. Intelligent agents, intelligence, and the ability to take effective decisions to forecast the future have fascinated individuals and entities across nations: its government, industries, organizations, and academia (NGIOA) since its early existence.

Irrespective of NGIOA, accurate predictions based on the sound decision-making process and intelligence is essential, as forecasting errors or bad decisions based on bad intelligence involve much more than the loss of money. This is where computational intelligence shows tremendous promise. The ability of a computer to learn a specific task from any and all available data and make the right decision is changing not only the fundamentals of computational intelligence but also how we address complex real-world problems to which mathematical or traditional modeling is not generally effective.

It is believed by many that the current technological momentum which covers many disruptive technologies such as ‘Internet of Things, ‘big data, ‘cloud computing, ‘deep learning, and more, is not only the beginning of a new industrial revolution but that the developments in Artificial Intelligence will be driving the transformation process across nations: its government, industries, organizations, and academia (NGIOA) in cyberspace, geospace, and space (CGS).

As we understand the science of intelligence further and build intelligent systems, fundamental changes and challenges are expected across nations: its government, industries, organizations, and academia (NGIOA) in cyberspace, geospace, and space (CGS). It is time to evaluate Computational Intelligence & Security Risks.

About the Guest

Dr. David Fogel received a Ph.D. in engineering sciences (systems science) from UCSD in 1992. He earned a B.S. degree in mathematical sciences (probability and statistics) from UCSB in 1985.

Dr. Fogel is an internationally recognized scientist, speaker, and engineer. In 1999, he was elevated to the status of IEEE Fellow, the then second-youngest Fellow in the history of the world’s largest organization of professional engineers.

In 2004, he received an IEEE Technical Field Award, and he has received numerous other distinctions, including San Diego Distinguished Scientist of the Year from Sigma Xi, the CajAstur Prize for Soft Computing, and he received an honorary doctorate in 2008 from the University of Pretoria.

In 2009, Dr. Fogel was named one of the top-100 most influential alumni in the then 50-year history of the University of California at San Diego. In 2014, Dr. Fogel was recognized as an “AI Hero” by the 150-member artificial intelligence team at Lockheed Martin.

Dr. Fogel’s experience includes 30 years of pioneering contributions in the field of computational intelligence. He has over 200 technical publications and a variety of non-technical articles for general audiences. In 1996, Dr. Fogel became the founding editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation, which now ranks typically in the top 3 of all computer science journals for impact factor annually.

He also served as editor-in-chief of BioSystems from 2001-2008. In 1993, Dr. Fogel co-founded Natural Selection, Inc., an award-winning woman-owned small business that focuses on applying computational intelligence to challenging problems. In 2006, Dr. Fogel co-founded Natural Selection Financial, Inc. a registered investment advisory firm, and served as a hedge fund manager from 2008-2010. Dr. Fogel also is a co-inventor of EffectCheck(R), an online system for evaluating the emotional content in communication.
