Alok Gautam, Co-Founder, and CEO of Olbrain based in the United States participate in Risk Roundup to discuss Artificial General Intelligence for Robotic Colonization in Space.

Artificial General Intelligence for Robotic Colonization

There is a growing belief that intelligent robots will play a key role in shaping the future of humanity. As seen across nations, humans are readying intelligent robots to gather information from the universe that would help identify where to build the spaces habitable for humans to live beyond earth. The question then is how will robots do that and what will it require. What level of intelligence will robots require to build human habitat?

Perhaps artificial general intelligence embedded in the robots designed for space missions will bring the much-needed space exploration and colonization solution. From single-purpose narrow artificial intelligence to artificial general intelligence that can be embedded in robots for exploration beyond earth and colonize, the evolution of artificial intelligence has come a long way.

Intelligence for Space Exploration and Colonization

Over the years, AI systems have been playing a significant role in space missions. As seen:

  • Artificial Intelligence has already helped optimize analysis of and response to natural occurrences like floods and volcanic eruptions.
  • Artificial Intelligence has already captured images even before the ground crew was made aware that the occurrence had taken place.
  • Artificial Intelligence has already handled autonomous targeting of cameras and chose what to investigate on the red planets.

Robotic Colonization

Now, as serious plans are made for space colonization, the question then emerges whether we have the necessary artificial general intelligence systems for space colonization that can be depended upon. So, the question is as we prepare to colonize space:

  • What is required to develop the AGI algorithms?
  • What is the nature of data sets that would be required for developing artificial general intelligence that humans can depend on for compelling space exploration and colonization? Or do we even need data sets to train algorithms?
  • Moreover, as space mission and applications produce a massive amount of data, do we have the capability to analyze the exploding data in a timely and efficient manner?
  • How do we understand the nature of the data that we have to the data we need, and how will that influence the designing and developing AGI algorithms?
  • What are the limiting factors for AGI development for space endeavors?
  • How do we understand the correctness of the algorithms to get in different contexts or conditions?
  • To be able to establish future homes in space, we will likely need to prepare planets for human survival. What role will AGI, play in preparing planets to Earth-like conditions?
  • What kind of algorithmic advances will be necessary to prepare AI for the imminent role?

The need for developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) could not be more apparent when it comes to exploring space beyond the Solar System. The time is now to understand the advances in artificial general intelligence.
