Jeff Williams, Partner at Bain Capital Ventures, based in the United States participates in Risk Roundup to discuss Investing in an Internet of Things Security.
Investing in the Internet of Things Security
As seen today, the world of connected smart devices is growing rapidly as the internet of things (IoT) initiatives are emerging from across nations. And no matter the nature of the initiative or size of the initiative, since all initiatives are defined by the investment, investors have the power to change the world as they influence not only the growth and development of an idea, innovation, business, industry, or a nation, but the entire human society: its survival, security, and sustainability beyond cyberspace, geospace, and space (CGS).
The challenge is that for IoT security, there is typically no active human user behind any of the devices. Moreover, devices of all sizes and shapes, hardware and software, log in on their own and sends data on their own. And for all intents and purposes, today an IoT device is simply a non-human user on the network. While the task of authenticating a human user is still a complex challenge, now the task of authenticating the Internet of Things devices itself is becoming a major concern.
Amidst the growing concerns, now quantum computing also impacts the already complex IoT ecosystem. With functional, quantum computers just around the corner and the artificial intelligence-driven smart, autonomous future dawning upon us, many complex security threats are emerging for IoT security. So, then the obvious question comes is, whether nations: and their public and private investors are allocating appropriate funding that is needed today? And where is the funding going?
The time is now to discuss Investing in the Internet of Things Security.
